STATA for Public PolicyCommercial Software LicensingStata is a data analysis tool used in multiple classes at GSPP and in the public policy field. Students must either purchase Stata with no financial assistance, or attempt to use the free university-wide instance of Stata to complete classwork. This free resource is consistently slow and difficult to use. A subsidy would reduce the cost of a license by 20% and improve quality of life for students during their coursework and future employment.$3,400.00

Members are learning complex music and video production and everyone can play at our open mic events and receive a video of their own to share with their friends and family! Journeys Through Science podcast eventTechnology EventsLearning from role models like themselves can help students navigate through the challenging parts of a STEM career. In spring-summer 2019, Double Shelix, a podcast founded by bioengineering PhD students, is hosting “Journeys,” a podcast event. Twelve podcast episodes will feature prominent STEM leaders, especially women and people from underrepresented backgrounds, sharing their journeys through science, with a focus on how they overcame challenges and navigated hardships. Funds will support podcast production, editing, and marketing. $4,083.91

Through our individual departments, we provide members with hands-on training. Automated capture and classification of bat vocalizationsHardware & Technology AcquisitionThe Egyptian Fruit Bat is an excellent choice to investigate non-primate mammalian language, with studies showing vocalizations and physiology resembling humans. The Redwood Center for Theoretical Neuroscience, in collaboration with Yartsev lab, are developing tools to understand and automate bat call collection and classification. This requires a multi-GPU server to develop and train language classification algorithms. Software developed using this server will be made publicly available, and serve as a valuable tool for future research.$4,225.59

Emergency Transfer Technology Program (ETTP)Hardware & Technology AcquisitionEmergency Transfer Technology Program (ETTP) project is asking for $5,000 to acquire the necessary technological resources to address the needs of low-income transfer students. Funds will be used to purchase long-term MacBook Airs rentals, evaluated through a 10 minute 1-on-1 session with a TSC counselor, who will determine rental length. This provides intimate case-by-case instances of equity, given that 52 percent of transfers are Pell recipients, and transfers are 6 times more likely to be independent students than traditional students. $4,969.53
